UM, Fudan University celebrate first cohort of Macao graduates from joint bachelor’s programme in finance
MACAU, August 11 - The University of Macau (UM) and Fudan University celebrated the first cohort of graduates from their ‘2.5+2.5’ programme in finance. Four students from Macao completed the five-year programme across Macao and Shanghai, earning a Bachelor of Science in Finance from UM and a Bachelor of Economics from Fudan University. Their success highlights the strengths of the joint degree programme, which draws on the resources of two cities and two universities with distinct educational approaches to cultivate financial professionals with academic excellence and a global outlook.
The standard duration of the ‘2.5+2.5’ programme in finance is five years. Students have to spend two and a half years studying the Bachelor of Science in Finance programme at UM, followed by a further two and a half years on the finance programme at Fudan University. The first cohort of Macao graduates from the programme are Bonnie Cai, Grace Cheang, Jennifer Guo, and Sarah Yang. All of them agreed that studying at both UM in Macao and Fudan University in Shanghai had not only enriched their learning experience, but also broadened their international outlook and deepened their expertise in finance.
The graduates noted that UM’s curriculum is broad and diverse. In addition to finance, it covers foundational business subjects such as management, accounting, and statistics. With English as the medium of instruction, international teaching materials, and diverse assessment methods, UM’s programme emphasises continuous learning throughout the semester and encourages students to develop their academic English and teamwork skills. In contrast, Fudan University’s curriculum places greater emphasis on cultivating knowledge in finance, with a stronger focus on mathematics and quantitative analysis. Students also engage with case studies related to China’s financial markets and are primarily assessed through final exams. To adapt to these different teaching approaches, the students further developed their independent learning skills and strengthened their knowledge of mathematics and programming in their spare time. They also benefited from Shanghai’s role as an international financial centre by securing internship opportunities during their time at Fudan University. The complementary strengths of the two universities enabled them to broaden their global perspectives and deepen their expertise in finance.
Drawing on the professional knowledge and practical experience they gained at both universities, the four graduates have embarked on new academic and professional journeys. Some have been accepted into master’s programmes at leading institutions (Cornell University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong), while some have received job offers from financial institutions in Macao. These successes demonstrate the strong competitiveness of UM graduates in both further studies and employment.
The success of the first cohort of Macao graduates from the ‘2.5+2.5’ programme in finance reflects the effectiveness of the programme’s joint talent cultivation model. Featuring a unique blend of opportunities, challenges, and potential for development, the programme offers an alternative pathway for Macao students who aspire to pursue a career in the financial sector.
