China’s Top Diplomat Visits Canada for First Time in Ten Years

(MENAFN) China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has arrived in Canada for a three-day official visit, marking the first trip by a Chinese foreign minister to the country in a decade, according to reports.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand confirmed the visit, saying on the US social media platform X: “I look forward to welcoming my Chinese counterpart, Minister Wang Yi, for the first visit to Canada by a Chinese Foreign Minister in a decade,”

The visit follows a period of renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s four-day trip to China in January, which was the first visit by a Canadian prime minister since 2017.

According to an official statement, Wang Yi and Anita Anand are scheduled to meet in Ottawa to discuss the implementation of an updated Canada–China Strategic Partnership framework, with a focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Trade between the two countries has continued at significant levels, reaching approximately $125.1 billion in 2025, underscoring the economic importance of the relationship despite past diplomatic tensions.

The visit is being viewed as part of broader efforts by both sides to stabilize and recalibrate relations after years of limited high-level exchanges.
