China Rejects Taiwan Independence, Warns It Is “a Dead End”

(MENAFN) China has reiterated its position that Taiwan is not a country, responding to recent statements from Taipei asserting sovereignty and independence, according to reports.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular briefing that “‘Taiwan independence’ and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water,” warning that efforts to pursue independence with external backing would fail.

“To seek ‘Taiwan independence’ by soliciting external support is a dead end,” he said.

He also stated that “cross-strait reunification is the only bright path forward,” urging Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party to acknowledge what he described as broader historical and political trends and to change course.

The comments came after US President Donald Trump said in an interview that he wants both China and Taiwan to “cool down” amid rising tensions.

Guo also responded to remarks by Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te, who said Taiwan “will never be sacrificed or traded away” and described US arms sales and security cooperation as important for regional stability.

China reaffirmed its opposition to US weapons sales to Taiwan, which Beijing refers to as its territory.

“The Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China. This constitutes the real status quo in the Taiwan Strait,” Guo said, rejecting Lai’s framing of Taiwan’s international role and its security partnerships.
