China Calls on Parties to Pursue Peace in Russia-Ukraine War
"We support any efforts conducive to peace," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said during a news briefing in Beijing.
Mao noted that recent developments have opened a door for dialogue in the Ukraine crisis, with various parties maintaining momentum for talks. She emphasized that dialogue and negotiation are the “only way out for the settlement of the crisis.”
"We hope all parties will grasp the opportunities and achieve a comprehensive, lasting, abiding peace deal. China is ready to work with the international community to play a constructive role in advancing the political settlement of the crisis," she added.
Responding to questions about whether China benefits from the war, Mao said Beijing’s “position is objective and clear... we always advocate for the end of fighting." She also stressed that China will "never add fuel and exploit the situation" for its own agenda and "we do not accept shift-blaming."
Reports note that thousands of civilians and combatants have died, and millions have been displaced along the Ukraine-Russia border since the war began on Feb. 24, 2022.
