China’s Highest-Ranking General Under Investigation

(MENAFN) China has initiated an investigation into its most senior military commander, Zhang Youxia, the nation's Defense Ministry confirmed.

Zhang, a Communist Party Politburo member and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC)—China's supreme military authority led by President Xi Jinping—faces allegations of "serious violations of discipline and law," the MOD declared Saturday. The probe extends to another high-ranking military figure, CMC member Liu Zhenli, on comparable charges.

Zhang, age 74, enlisted in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1968 and has remained in his position past the standard retirement threshold for Chinese military leadership.

Certain Western publications have speculated that Zhang may have transmitted classified intelligence regarding China's nuclear capabilities to the United States and received substantial bribes in return for facilitating official appointments. Beijing has not verified these allegations.

State-controlled media referenced a Sunday editorial from the premier military publication, which declared that officials convicted of corruption would be "dealt with without leniency" irrespective of their rank.

Since commencing his third presidential term in 2023, Xi has escalated anti-corruption campaigns targeting both military institutions and the Communist Party's supreme governing body, the Politburo. He has maintained that financial malfeasance undermines national progress and erodes party discipline.

Numerous senior officials have been removed over the past three years, including two vice chairmen and three CMC members, one defense minister, and more than a dozen generals.

Addressing a gathering of the country's primary anti-corruption agency on January 12, Xi stated the CPC Central Committee had made "solid progress" in improving party conduct and combating corruption. He emphasized that conditions remained "grave and complex" and insisted there must be "no place to hide" for corrupt officials.
