Beijing emphasizes peace following Trump’s remarks on Iran

(MENAFN) China on Monday urged restraint and emphasized the need for measures that promote peace and stability after U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration was weighing “very strong options” in response to unrest in Iran.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing, “We always oppose interference in other countries' internal affairs and call on parties that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected.” She added, “We oppose the use of force or the threat of use of force in international relations. We call on all parties to act in ways conducive to peace and stability in the Middle East.”

Her comments followed Trump’s remarks about Iran: “These are violent -- if you call them leaders -- I don't know if they're leaders or just, they rule through violence. But, we're looking at it very seriously.” He continued, “The military is looking at it, and we're looking at some very strong options. We'll make a determination.”

Iran has been experiencing widespread demonstrations since December 28, triggered by the collapse of its currency and worsening economic conditions. A U.S.-based rights organization reported that 490 protesters and 48 security personnel have been killed, with more than 10,600 arrests, though official figures have not been released.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the unrest as a “terrorist war,” claiming that authorities had obtained audio recordings of instructions sent to armed groups ordering them to fire on civilians and security forces.
